WaSH-GENDER is a water and development partnership programme (https://www.un-ihe.org/what-we-do/water-and-development-partnership-programme) of the IHE-Delft (https://www.un-ihe.org), funded by the DGIS, the development cooperation agency of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Our project is powered by a consortium involving the University of Uyo (https://uniuyo.edu.ng), public agencies, private and non-governmental organizations including the Akwa Ibom State Rural Water and Sanitation (AKRUWATSAN), Akwa Ibom Water Company Limited (AKWCL), Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Rural Development & Cooperative (AKSMRDC), Development Impact Pathfinders Initiatives (DEVIMPATH) and Afiko Sunday LP (a law firm). Coordinated by Emmanuel Akpabio (http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6105-1782), WaSH-GENDER seeks to explore how the cultural notion of being a man or woman intersects with micro-geographies to determine workload imbalances in access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) in Nigeria. For instance, how does being a man or woman shape the capacity to access water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) in Nigeria? Launched December 1, 2022, WaSH-GENDER will run for 18 months (with a possibility of scale-up) and will feature transdisciplinary research, public meetings, focus groups, interviews, series of workshops and webinars, public policy advocacies and engagements, education, training and mentoring, and dissemination. Our project was featured at the IWRA XVIII World Water Congress coming up September 11-15, 2023 at Beijing, China (https://www.worldwatercongress.com). The project also fully supports three MSc fellows to facilitate capacity building and encourage generational knowledge transfer. Our MSc Fellows work on different topics that are directly relevant to our research. Current Awardees include:
1. Eno-Obong Christopher Umoh of the Department of Geography & Natural Resources Management, University of Uyo. Eno-Obong Umoh is working on “Workload imbalances and associated consequences in access to WaSH services between men and women in Akwa Ibom State”.
2. Itoro David, also from Geography and Natural Resources Department, University of Uyo. Itoro David works on “spatialising the experiences of women in access to water and toilet facilities in riverine and upland settlements in Akwa Ibom State”.
3. Itoro Benedict of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Uyo. Itoro Benedict explores “perceptions on gender equality and social inclusion in the WaSH value-chain in Akwa Ibom State”.
The project also runs the school advocacy programme, which aims to set up school WaSH club to promote awareness of the public health perspectives of WaSH among students and pupils. We formally launched this arm of our project in Odoro Ikpe, headquarters of Ini LGA on the 27th May 2023. School WaSH programme is led by Eme Daniel Eteke. In the course of our implementation, we have had cause to engage in joint learning in addition to field visit to some villages in the riverine and upland parts of Akwa Ibom State including Isotoyo, Amasaba community in Eastern Obolo and Mbiabet Ikot Udo in Ini. WaSH-GENDER is available on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn. Like us and follow our activities.
